Our Approach

What is Existential Counseling and Therapy?

Existential Therapy is a humanistic-experiential psychotherapy approach that addresses the underlying existential concerns often associated with substance use disorders, including identity disturbance, meaninglessness, diminished self-worth, chronic shame, isolation, and impaired autonomy.

Drawing from existential psychology, this therapeutic modality helps clients examine their relationship with freedom, personal responsibility, mortality, purpose, and self-definition.

In addiction treatment, existential interventions focus on increasing self-awareness, strengthening self-concept, enhancing psychological flexibility, and fostering authentic living aligned with personally meaningful values. Clients are encouraged to explore maladaptive coping patterns, confront existential anxiety, develop a greater sense of agency, and cultivate a life characterized by purpose, connection, and self-transcendence.

Rather than viewing recovery solely as abstinence from substances, existential therapy conceptualizes recovery as the ongoing process of creating meaning, embracing responsibility, and actualizing one’s potential through intentional and value-driven living.
